Head Lice and Laundry: How We Can Help

Head lice are a common problem for families, especially with kids in primary school. They’re annoying, hard to get rid of, and can spread fast in households.

Once someone is treated for lice, cleaning clothes, bedding, and other soft items is a key step. This helps stop lice from coming back or spreading to others.

A professional laundry service makes this process faster, easier, and more effective:

1. Hot Washes Kill Lice and Eggs
We use machines that wash at 60°C or higher—hot enough to kill lice and their eggs (nits).

2. Fast, Service
We can wash and return your items quickly. No need to wait or overload your home machine.

3. Deep Clean for All Soft Items
Lice can live on pillowcases, doonas, blankets, sheets, and even soft toys. We clean all of them thoroughly in one go.

4. Large Loads, No Problem
We can handle big piles of washing—perfect for busy families dealing with a lice outbreak.

5. Peace of Mind
Our service helps you feel confident the job is done right. No guessing if the lice are gone.

6. Less Stress, Less Mess
You focus on treating the kids—we’ll handle the laundry.

The trickiest part about getting rid of head lice is that the lice’s nits or eggs can get up on a variety fabrics, towels and beds. They infest children’s clothing, especially hats, sweaters, and tops. As a result, it’s critical to collect all of the laundry that may have been impacted. This will include everything:

Any of their headbands or other hair accessories and also any hats.

Towels they may have used to wash their hair.

Bedding.

Coats and clothing

Remember that the kids like to snuggle on the couch, so vacuum that as well. Throw pillows and couch blankets will need to be laundered as well. Stuffed toys and other soft items that the children come into touch with should also be disinfected and laundered.

To clean these items, we’ll put them into their appropriate categories and wash them as usual. Unless the integrity of the things being washed is jeopardized, we will use the hottest water setting whenever possible. We’ll use a high-quality egg-killing laundry detergent and, if possible, a high-heat dryer setting.

To clean your items properly, we’ll sort them by type and wash them using the best method for each. Where safe for the fabric, we’ll use the hottest water setting and a high-quality detergent designed to kill lice and eggs. We’ll also use high-heat drying when possible.

For items that can’t handle hot water, we’ll either pre-soak them in strong detergent or dry clean them—depending on what’s safest for the fabric.

If we come across anything that can’t be washed or dry cleaned, we’ll seal it in a plastic bag and store it near our dryers for a full week. After that, we’ll empty and carefully vacuum the contents to remove any dead lice or eggs.

This process helps ensure your items are clean, safe, and lice-free.

Another issue is that adult lice can survive for up to 30 days on their host. They will be busy laying their eggs on all fabrics throughout this time. After the eggs are placed, they will hatch in about 10 days and mature in another 10 days, restarting the cycle. It has been reported that nits can survive away from their host for up to 10 days; this is the danger period, therefore you should inspect your hair frequently during this time.
